Wedding guests will pay over £700 – to attend just one wedding | Personal finance | Finance

They will also spend £88.40 on travel, £84.90 on a hen or bachelor party, £80.40 on alcohol, £78 on food – and an additional £72.10 on hair and makeup.

This brings the total to £700.50 – for a single wedding.

And with the average person planning to attend three weddings in the next 12 months, that means their costs could run into the thousands of pounds.

Justine Gonsalves, senior category manager at Amazon Handmade, who commissioned the research to highlight her bridal shop, said: “With our research which found that average wedding guests plan to spend over £700 on a only wedding this year, it’s understandable that there will be worry about potential expenses – especially during the current cost of living crisis.

The study also found that more than half (54%) felt they had to spend more money than they would like to attend a wedding – with one major expense being a wedding gift.

This could explain why 51% plan to wear the same outfit if they attend multiple weddings – while attending more than one wedding in a year would also lead to 53% less spending on gifts.

The most popular gifts are cash (29%), personalized gifts (22%), white goods like a freezer or washing machine (19%), or payment for part of the honeymoon ( 18%).

But even though nearly a third opt for the easy option of giving money to newlyweds, personalized gifts are also appreciated.

Half of those surveyed, via OnePoll, think it shows they care more than just buying a generic gift.

While 47% think it shows the couple that they like personalized gifts, so they could receive something bespoke in the future.

It also emerged that 62 per cent wanted weddings to be cheaper and two-thirds admitted they were concerned about the impact weddings could have on their finances.

And 45% believed weddings had become more expensive since the start of the coronavirus pandemic – but there was a determination not to let that hold them back, as 36% said they were more excited about the prospect of attend now that the restrictions had been removed.

Xavier Flamand, VP of Amazon Handmade EU, said, “We are always proud to be a champion for small businesses and makers.

“With many people across the country planning to attend a number of weddings throughout the season – especially after the delays and backlog of the pandemic – people want to take advantage of the big day.

“As our research shows, personalized gifts are a unique way to show your love, and finding one at the right price is paramount for nearly two-thirds of respondents. »
