Watch the trailer: ‘Truth Be Told: The Fight for Women’s Professional Soccer’ investigates abuse

“This is how pain has a purpose. This is how these female players regained their power,” we are told in a new trailer for “Truth Be Told: The Fight for Women’s Professional Soccer.” The ESPN documentary looks back at how the players took a stand against the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) after years of abuse and a lack of basic protections.

Amid allegations of sexual misconduct, players halted three games in October 2021 – Gotham FC vs. Washington Spirit, North Carolina Courage vs. Racing Louisville and Houston Dash vs. Portland Thorns – to tie arms in the center circle for a while of silence. Players remember that the “power” of the moment is “undeniable” and use that time to “think about the change” they want to see. “The whole league was geared towards protecting everyone but [players]“, it is underlined.

The spot explores how a “culture of silence” has plagued the league. “They have to shut up if they want this job,” we are told. When players “hit that tipping point,” there was no turning back.

“Truth Be Told” airs July 25 on ESPN’s “E60.”
