Tom Bower wanted to protect the image of the British monarchy, and he did so by going against Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, in his book Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors”. He said he was motivated to focus his book on her because of her criticism of the royal family.
During his recent appearance on ‘Lorraine’, the investigative journalist admitted he never really thought of the Duchess of Sussex as the subject of his book. He said: “I haven’t really started thinking about Meghan other than interest.”
However, that changed when he saw the couple’s interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021. He shared that this motivated him to seek out Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, especially the latter, for his next book.
“That’s what triggered it. I thought it was so shameful. I thought she had behaved so badly and so did Harry, that I wanted to know why and what had happened before,” Bower told presenter Christine Lampard.
He added: “What was his life like? Which would lead her to this interview where she said so many things that were just plain untrue and so damaging.”
Bower said he interviewed 80 sources for ‘Revenge’ and most of them didn’t like the former ‘Suits’ actress. He received complaints that his book was biased, given that insiders were against the Duchess.
Lampard asked him about it, to which he replied: “Well, it’s not biased in the sense that I do my best to balance it, and there are a lot of good things to about Meghan there. She is ambitious. She is beautiful. She is determined… and in the end she managed to find a man who built her and who she had been looking for all along.”
But Bower explained that “along the way there were many casualties” that he said he sought out because Meghan Markle allegedly “did her best to stop her friends and the people she worked with from talk to him”. He said he had to “work hard to find the balance” and believes “Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors” is a balanced book.
