Windsor Fire and Rescue Services responded shortly before 4:20 a.m. to reports of flames and smoke at a multi-unit structure at 495 Tuscarora Street, on the southwest corner of Tuscarora Street and the Glengarry Ave.
Firefighters arrived to find the blaze already so intense that a defensive approach to the situation was required.
Flames were visible on the roof of the building – a one-story commercial structure redeveloped for residential use.
Two fire engines deployed their aerial platforms to direct water jets at the fire from above.
Thick smoke filled the neighborhood, visible for blocks away.
Despite advice from Windsor Fire and Rescue Services, many citizens came out to stand and watch.
The efforts of the firefighters continued in the morning. As of 10 a.m., nearly six hours after the initial call, units were still on the scene directing water at the structure.
Members of the public were asked to avoid the area.
The cause of the fire and the resulting damage were still under investigation at the time of going to press.
