The Loop: Mortgage borrowers at serious risk of not being able to pay, Naomi Judd will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and your dog is really special (science proves it)

Hi Hi.

It is Monday, May 2and you’re reading The Loop, a quick summary of today’s news headlines.

let’s start here

As interest rates are about to start rising, almost 300,000 mortgage borrowers are at serious risk of failure.

Data from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) shows that out of 1 million new home loans taken out over the past two years, around 280,000 Australians have borrowed six or more times their income and/or have loan-to-value ratios over 90%.

One wonders now whether financial regulators – especially banking watchdog APRA – should have acted sooner to restrict lenders.

Research has confirmed what dog lovers know – each puppy is truly an individual (and your dog is indeed a good dog).

Elinor Karlsson, a geneticist from the University of Massachusetts in the United States, set out to determine which dog breeds are associated with distinctive and predictable behaviors.

The answer: Although physical traits like the long legs of a greyhound or the spots of a Dalmatian are clearly inherited, breed is not a reliable indicator of a dog’s personality.

“There’s a huge amount of behavioral variation in every breed, and at the end of the day, every dog is really an individual,” Karlsson said.
