Wholesale sales rose 1.6% in May to $81.1 billion, boosted by higher sales in the food, beverage and tobacco and machinery subsectors, according to Statistics Canada. , equipment and supplies.
The agency says this is the eighth increase in the past 10 months, with sales rising in five of the seven wholesale sub-sectors it tracks.
The food, beverage and tobacco subsector led the way higher as it gained 7.8% to $14.7 billion in May, boosted by an 8.7 % of the food industry.
Sales in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector rose 3.2% to $17.0 billion, led by a 17.2% increase in sales of agricultural machinery and equipment , lawn and garden and up 6.5% for the computer and communications equipment and supplies industry.
Meanwhile, sales of building materials and supplies fell 4.3% to $13.2 billion, sales of lumber, joinery, hardware and other supplies construction fell by 8.2%.
Overall sales in constant dollars rose 1.1% in May.
