Sir Salman Rushdie was stabbed around 12 times – including in the face and neck, the US prosecutor’s office said.

One of the facial injuries caused Sir Salman’s eye to be punctured, the Chautauqua County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Another to the abdomen caused a perforation of the author’s liver.

There were also several other stab wounds to the abdomen and chest.

The 75-year-old author was airlifted to hospital and underwent surgery hours after the attack ahead of a talk he was to give in New York State on Friday afternoon.

Earlier Saturday, the suspect pleaded not guilty to attempted murder.

A lawyer pleaded on behalf of Hadi Matar24, during an arraignment hearing.

Matar appeared in court wearing a black and white jumpsuit and a white mask, his hands cuffed in front of him.
