Pete Davidson fans are laughing at his apparent decision to sunbathe ahead of a weekend of glamorous events including the Met Gala, with some suggesting the comic is flirting with cultural appropriation.
Fans first noticed a change in Davidson’s appearance in photos taken at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night, where he and girlfriend Kim Kardashian walked the red carpet. He also appeared more tanned than usual on the Met Gala red carpet on Monday night, alongside Kardashian once again.
The icing on the cake was an appearance on Netflix’s comedy-centric Instagram account, @netflixisajoke, in which he joked about his spray tan that same weekend.
Some Twitter users, like @youvegotnomales, lightheartedly trolled Davidson for apparently having the beauty treatment, saying, “Pete Davidson is the only person I’ve ever seen look less fit with a tan. »
But some critics echoed concerns that the Kardashians used spray tans and certain hairstyles as a form of cultural appropriation.
Kim Kardashian in particular has already been criticized on several occasions for using spray tan too liberally. Writer and Twitter user @MediumSizeMeech wrote, “The way I predicted Pete was going to get darker and darker now that he’s with Kim K. My mind.” He’s on his way to the color of Wesley Snipes, I know that. »
Another Twitter user, @DestroyerOfNat2, called Davidson’s look a “spray tan hate crime.”
Others couldn’t help but recall the time Davidson previously ridiculed ex-fiancée Ariana Grande’s spray tan tendencies. He accused her of “spray paint[ing] herself brunette” for a 2019 vogue cover.
But it turns out this weekend wasn’t Davidson’s first time indulging in a spray tan, and his appreciation for the treatment predates his relationship with Kardashian.
He confirmed in early January that he got a tan before hosting a New Year’s Eve special with Miley Cyrus, according to We Weekly. He also joked during a Netflix comedy show taped over the weekend about what it was like to undergo the treatment.
Netflix’s Instagram comedy, @netflixisajoke, lent Davidson a shot for her Met Gala look. The account reposted the clip of Davidson joking about the procedure during the Netflix taping. “You might notice Pete Davidson looking *a little different* tonight,” Netflix captioned the clip. ” There is a reason for this. »
“I couldn’t wear makeup for it because I had a spray tan,” Davidson says in the clip. “I think that’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever said. I asked my boy, I’ve never had a tan before. »
Davidson asked his friend for advice on whether his whole body should be tanned. “I asked my boy, I was like, am I doing my b*** and my ass? ” he said. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to do. Do I become like one of those Borat speedos? I had no idea. And my boy said, ‘Leave it blank. More impressive that way. « »
Fans had a field day with the clip. “And the Kardashians have struck again,” @rachel.danaa wrote. “Ugh Pete spray tan? said another, as @jkinteachem76. “You have become a person you made fun of. »
The clip and photos from the taping are dated May 2, the same day as the Met Gala. They are part of Netflix’s comedy festival, Netflix Is a Joke, and will appear in a Netflix special titled The Hall: Tribute to the greats of stand-upfeaturing Davidson and airing later that year.
