State Disability Commissioner SH Panchapakesan issued notices to filmmaker Shaji Kailas and producers Supriya Menon and Listin Stephen demanding an explanation for alleged derogatory dialogue against disabled people in the film. Vanishdirected by Shaji Kailas.
The order to issue notices was based on a complaint filed by Parivaar, an association of parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
In a sequence of the film, the protagonist played by Prithviraj says that disabled children are born with such conditions because of the sins of their parents. The Parivaar, in its complaint, said such unscientific and insensitive dialogue causes immense pain to parents of children with disabilities as well as to the children themselves.
This is a crime within the meaning of section 92 of the Disability Rights Act 2016, which deals with the penalties for intentionally insulting or intimidating with intent to humiliate a disabled person in any place at public view.
Several people had raised the issue on social media after the film’s release on Friday.
