A young woman and baby have died after an accident with a lorry on a deadly Northern Territory highway.

A young woman and a baby have died in a horrific accident with a lorry in the Northern Territory.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Friday, emergency services were called to Roper Highway near Strangeways River following reports of a serious crash involving a car and truck.

Northern Territory Police confirmed that a young woman and a baby died at the scene. Two other occupants of the vehicle were taken care of by the on-site emergency services.

Police declared a crime scene on the regional stretch of the highway between the communities of Jilkminggan and Ngukurr in the northern part of the territory.

Detectives from the Major Accident Investigation Unit will investigate the collision.

The crash comes amid a spike in fatalities on Northern Territory roads.

Police report 31 people have died on Northern Territory roads so far this year.

The number of road deaths in the Northern Territory in the first six months of 2022 is just below the 35 road deaths for the whole of 2021.

Friday’s collision is the third fatal crash on the Roper Freeway in years after a pedestrian was hit by a car in 2020 and an 18-month-old child was killed in a single-vehicle crash in 2016 .
