This story contains spoilers for Season Four, Volume Two of Strange things.
Amid a particularly heartbreaking death from Demo-bats and an all-new villain, you may have lost sight of one of this season’s best storylines – Will Byers seemingly struggling with his sexuality and his friendship with Mike.
In the past, when Noah Schapp – who plays Will on the show – talked about his character’s sexuality, he would say things like “it’s up to the audience’s interpretation”. Now, however, in an interview with VarietySchnapp not only confirmed that Will is gay, but that he’s definitely in love with Mike. “I mean, it’s pretty clear this season that Will has feelings for Mike,” Schnapp said. “They intentionally pulled that out over the last few seasons. Even in the first season, they hinted at it and slowly, slowly developed that story. I think for season four it was just me playing this character who loves his best friend. but struggles to know if he will be accepted or not, and feels like a mistake and like he doesn’t belong. Will always felt that way. »
It makes sense. Even from season one, Upside Down antics aside, Will always seemed to struggle to fully fit in with his friends. Later in the interview, Variety asked if Schnapp had only avoided saying Will was gay because he considered it a spoiler. “Yeah, I think it’s [a spoiler] “, he said. Obviously, it was brought up in season 1: it was always kinda there, but you never really knew it, is it just that he’s growing slower than his friends? Now that he’s aged, they’ve made it a very real and obvious thing. Now it’s 100% clear that he’s gay and loves Mike. »
We’ll surely see how Will’s relationship with Mike plays out in season five. Waiting? Let’s just hope Vecna leaves poor Will alone.
