Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean Perform Fugees Hits at Essence Festival

Ms Lauryn Hill reunited with Wyclef Jean at the Essence Festival in New Orleans on Friday night for a surprise performance of four Fugees songs. Although neither Wyclef nor Hill were on the original festival lineup, Hill appeared on stage thirty minutes into Wyclef’s set to perform “Killing Me Softly”, “How Many Mics”, “Fu-Gee-La” and “Ready or Not”.

Wyclef shared a video on Twitter of the moment Hill joined him on stage with the caption, “This is what it looks like when a real GOAT enters the arena! »

The beloved hip-hop trio, including third band member Pras, gave their last public performance at an unannounced concert in New York in September last year. Prior to this, the band had not reunited on stage since 2006.

The Fugees were scheduled to do a 25th anniversary tour this year, but it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band wrote on social media: “The continuing Covid pandemic has made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep ourselves and our fans healthy and safe. An idea has germinated to honor and celebrate this 25th anniversary of “The Score”, but now we see that this may not be the time to revisit this past work.

“We are grateful for the special evening we were able to share with some of you in New York, with this rare live moment,” the statement continued. “If the occasion, public safety and programming permit, we hope to be able to revisit this very soon. Thank you for all your love and support throughout these years.
