Joe Biden and Trevor Noah speak at the 2022 White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Earlier Saturday, in anticipation (or fear) of the return after a three-year hiatus of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, our sister site released a preview.

Certain things would of course be surprises tonight, as with any live event. But we knew (or suspected) a few things in advance: Dr. Anthony Fauci wouldn’t be there. President Joe Biden would make remarks. And there would be plenty of unfunny jokes thrown around just for the sake of those mostly left-leaning media present at the so-called Nerd Prom.

The 2022 dinner did not disappoint on these counts. Well, mostly.

There was a bunch of tedious “business” before the speeches that everyone showed up to see – Joe Biden and the host of the evening, “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah. You will understand why I mention it in a minute.

In a night that the press considers pagan for itself and its unequaled virtues, it was naturally necessary to give awards. Think of it as their own version of the Oscars. Anyway, one of those prizes was this:

And Jonathan Karl felt the need to tell everyone in the room and watching at home via C-SPAN what Jan. 6 was all about in his 15-second acceptance speech.

Really pathetic.

Then there was Joe Biden, who delivered about 15 minutes of remarks. He began by thanking “the 42% of you who clapped,” referring to his dismal approval rating. It was quite funny. But right away, he got into a nasty joke aimed at President Donald Trump. Biden said the country had suffered “a horrible plague, followed by two years of COVID.”

But the crowd showed they weren’t afraid to boo some really dead-on-arrival gags, like him insisting that if Trump had come to this year’s event, “it would have been a real hit.” of state”.

Biden had another easy joke for the crowd, saying Democrats expected to face a “traffic jam” after midterms…but “we can work it out over the next six years that I’ll be at the table.” able “.

In another joke bomb, he recalled Ronald Reagan’s famous quote, “(Mr. Gorbachev), tear down this wall!” He explained that, for today’s Republicans, it’s “Tear down that mouse’s house” and they’re coming for Cinderella’s castle. »

Near the end of his remarks, Biden made one of his sayings that he didn’t really mean what he was about to say (and you shouldn’t trust anything). He said, “I give you my word as Biden” that he’s optimistic about America’s future.

You can find some of Biden’s screaming jokes here:

While figuratively handing the mic to Noah, he joked that a comedian was going to crack jokes at the country’s leader’s expense – and unlike Russia, he wouldn’t go to jail. Har Har.

Trevor Noah cracked a good joke at the start of his remarks. Calling it Washington’s next “super spreader event,” he asked the audience, “Didn’t you learn anything from the Grid Iron Dinner?” He also jokingly pointed out that even Fauci wouldn’t risk it.

Quickly, however, he turned nasty against enemies of the Democratic leadership like Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ). Noah urged the public to ‘give it up’ for her – because she’s managed to be ‘openly bisexual, but a closed Republican’. He also had to make a tired “crawl” joke roasting Trump in absentia, but the joke was directed at someone who was in the room – Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. I think I counted four or five jokes against him, more than any other journalist or politician. That tells you something.

Noah also found time to repeat the lie that the Biden administration only plans to raise taxes on billionaires. There is nothing to joke about.

One of Trevor Noah’s best-delivered jokes was at Joe Biden’s expense, however, which you must give credit for. He said he finally understood why he was chosen to host this year’s WHCA dinner.

Biden gets the best marks when he stands next to a bi-racial black man.

Two quick asides: Noah tried (in my opinion) twice to savage people in the room. Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais would have been proud.

He hinted that there were so many people seated in the room that they managed to attract “everyone who has been to Jeffrey Epstein’s island”. Sure, it didn’t go down well in the room, but it was hilarious. Ricky Gervais would be proud.

The second shot was straight at the Biden administration, and Trevor Noah swiped it as he walked away from the microphone.

But again, many of the jokes during the nearly 25-minute speech were like this (like I said, note the target):
