Earlier this week, Malandra Burrows revealed her grief after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The former Emmerdale actress was diagnosed in February after discovering a lump a month earlier.
However, Malandra, 56, is now feeling positive after having a stage three tumor removed from her left breast. “You might think you’re really healthy, but that little ‘C’ word can still get to you,” she said OK! Magazine. “I just caught up [while exercising] and I thought, ‘Damn, what is this?’ ”
At first she didn’t think there was anything to worry about, but a few days later the lump hadn’t gone away so she called her GP. “A week later I was in the hospital and the first consultant told me it was a cyst. He said, ‘I won’t see you again.’ The relief I felt,” recalls Malandra.

However, a follow-up scan and ultrasound showed something much more sinister and she was called into hospital for another appointment and told to bring someone with her. “I had already galvanized myself before hearing the news, so I never cried about it,” she said. “During this week, my body involuntarily went into depression. I didn’t feel like I was cracking up, but I just couldn’t eat or do anything. There was something in the back of my mind that knew what was going on inside of me. body. »
Now she is ready to fight because over the next six months Malandra will undergo chemotherapy. “I sort of went into combat mode. If I look back, I gave it my all and that’s all I can do. I hate to say it, but when it’s your life that’s on the line, you’re ready to do anything to go through. It helped me focus.
Fans will probably remember Malandra, from Woolton, Liverpool, best for her long-running role as Kathy Glover on the ITV soap opera Emmerdale. She auditioned for the role just months after leaving acting school and got the part. She made her first appearance on The Dales in November 1985 and during her 16 years on the soap, she had a few marriages and had a near death experience when she was hit by Steve Marchant’s car after having stole and left. Kathy for dead.
But in 2001, new series producer Steve Frost decided to write the character. Malandra, however, briefly reprized the role in 2005, as Kathy returned for Seth Armstrong’s funeral.
Even before leaving drama school, Malandra had had several television roles, appearing in The Practice and Fell Tiger, as well as two roles in former Channel 4 soap opera Brookside – first class of Lucy Collins, Sue, then Lisa Morrissey, Pat Hancock’s girlfriend.
And that’s just the acting that Malandra got involved in. She also had some success in the UK Singles Chart, reaching number 11 with the song ‘Just This Side of Love’ in 1990. She then released the self-penned single ‘Summernight Love’. in 1996 which resulted in a record deal with Warner Bros and two more singles.
During her career, Malandra has played many theater roles and appeared in a few games and reality shows, most notably in 2006 when she appeared on Channel 5’s The All Star Talent Show, finishing fifth as the spitter of fire and entered late in the 2006 series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! the seventh day.
She was found hanging from a tightrope and had to be rescued as part of the trial by Matt Willis and Lauren Booth. While at camp, she participated in several Bushtucker trials and was the sixth celebrity to be deported during a one-on-one with Dean Gaffney.
Not much is known about Malandra’s private life, but she recently said when speaking about her breast cancer diagnosis that she is single.
