Gilbert Cruz Named New York Times Books Editor

The Times publishes the last independent section of newspaper book reviews in the country, which has been in print since 1896.

The publishers said Mr. Cruz would reinvent The New York Times Book Review, the weekly print section, for a digital audience. They said it would “increase and embolden our reporting and criticism of ideas and intellectual life, the world of publishing and all that lives in it”, as well as help readers choose which books to read.

Mr. Cruz started at The Times seven years ago as a television editor. Prior to that, he was editorial director of Vulture, the New York magazine’s culture site.
