FACT CHECK: Did Donald Trump release a statement referring to his recovery from COVID-19 as ‘herculean’?

An image shared on Facebook purportedly shows a statement by former President Donald Trump in which he alleges doctors “described my battle with the Chinese virus as herculean.”

Verdict: False

The image is digitally fabricated. There is no evidence that Trump issued such a statement.

Fact check:

President Joe Biden recently tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing what the White House calls “very mild” symptoms, according to Politico. Biden is not the first US president to contract the virus. Trump tested positive in October 2020, prompting a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center where he received monoclonal antibody treatment, Politico reported.

An image shared on Facebook purports to show a July 21 statement Trump released about Biden’s positive test in which he wishes Biden a speedy recovery. He also claims in the statement that “doctors have described my battle with the Chinese virus as Herculean, and not meaning the awakened Disney Hercules but rather that of Kevin Sorbo.”

Actor Kevin Sorbo starred in the television series “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys” from 1995 to 1999, according to IMDb. (RELATED: FACT CHECK: No, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris didn’t quit)

The image shared on Facebook is digitally made. No such statement about Biden’s COVID-19 diagnosis can be found on Trump’s website or the former president’s Truth Social account. There are also no credible reports suggesting the former president has commented on Biden’s diagnosis yet.

Taylor Budowich, Trump’s communications director, tweeted that the statement was “false”.

“This is a false statement, claiming to be from Save America/President Trump, FALSE. It was obviously designed by a prankster,” Budowich tweeted.

The misrepresentation appears to come from a Twitter user Ingenuous Fire Brandonwho describes himself as a “meme maker”. The original tweet garnered over 5,000 retweets and 41,000 likes at the time of publication.
