Les Actualites host Victor Blackwell questioned Democratic Rep. Judy Chu of California after the congresswoman claimed abortion was motivating voters on Friday.
“As Democrats say this issue should motivate voters, there’s a New York Times/Siena College poll that asked about the issues most important to voters,” Blackwell Chu said. “It’s still the economy, inflation. In fact, for Democrats and Independents, abortion rights do not outpace inflation. It’s behind the economics and political divisions and gun politics. Is there evidence that abortion rights is a motivating topic for the voters you need to run in November? »
“Well, I have never seen so much anger, outrage and terror among the women of this country anywhere I go,” replied Chu, who introduced legislation guaranteeing the right to abortion in the 50 States. “Everyone is talking about it and talking about what we can do about it. Thus, women are very motivated, as well as the men who support them, to make a difference. And, in fact, there have been nonstop protests and rallies across the country since the Dobbs ruling three weeks ago. »
The legislation passed the House by a vote of 219 to 210 on Friday, Les actualites reported.
Blackwell pointed to polling data to push back against Chu’s claims.
“Again, the polls show that the economy, inflation and the other list of things I just read are what really motivate voters more than abortion rights,” Blackwell replied.
The Supreme Court upheld a Mississippi law that banned most abortions after the 15th week of pregnancy in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, quashing Roe v. Wade. Democrats began fundraising on the Dobs decision almost immediately, but some efforts to use abortion to save Democratic majorities in the House and Senate appear to be failing, The Hill reported.
Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, who heads the Democratic House Campaign Committee, and President Joe Biden made statements pledging to protect abortion rights in the wake of the Dobbs ruling, according to NBC News.
“This fall, Roe is on the ballot,” Biden said.
“The Democrats are going to protect Roe from Wade,” Maloney said.
Chu did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
