‘Deadpool 3’ Writers Allay Fan Fears Over Franchise Disneyfication – Deadline

The next Dead Pool 3 marks the first film in the franchise to be produced after Disney bought 20th Century Fox. Fans have expressed concern that the R-rated Merc with a Mouth will become just another kid-friendly prankster under new ownership. Screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick allayed those fears in a recent interview with Den of Geek.

“Deadpool is going to be Deadpool,” Wernick said.

The duo, who wrote the first two installments, weren’t initially on board for round three. But they were recruited after Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin penned a previous draft. And they’re excited to be back – and also to have the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe to play with.

“It’s a thrill,” Reese said of the merger of Marvel properties previously held separately by the two studios. “It’s an absolute pleasure to reunite with the group, to have a new backdrop in the MCU with new characters, new villains, that sort of thing. You know, it’s never a marriage that we necessarily saw coming, Fox and Disney, it was an outside thing [apart] of our storytelling process. But we absolutely find luck and gold in this situation, or we try to.

What about their habit of poking fun at other Marvel franchises and/or pushing the boundaries of superhero humor under the watchful eye of Mouse House brand shepherds?

“Don’t worry about it,” Reese said. “They have been very supportive in that regard. Now, when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, we might at some point hear, “Maybe not that joke. “But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we’ve been doing it separately for a long time, and I think they’ve seen success and they’ve had their own success even more big. So I hope this will be a marriage made in heaven. But we definitely have their support, and that’s a good thing to feel.
