A Jersey Shore fisherman has a surprising encounter with a great white shark

A fisherman cruising off the southern coast of New Jersey captured video of a great white shark nearly half the size of his 23-foot-long boat.

Fisherman, Pennsylvania native Jim Piazza, rents a house in the Townsends Inlet neighborhood of Sea Isle for the summer and had been fishing with his son, Jayden, all morning when he nearly ran over the 12ft shark.

“The videos don’t do it justice,” Piazza said of the shark’s size. “It was just nonchalantly there. I have never seen anything like it. He then posted a video of the encounter on his Facebook page.

Shortly after the incident was reported, the US Coast Guard boarded Piazza’s boat and, after conducting a security check, shared the video on their social media as well.

Sharks aren’t uncommon in New Jersey, but getting video this close certainly is with the great whites rarely getting close enough to shore to threaten swimmers. The Florida-based International Shark Attack File lists 15 confirmed, unprovoked shark attacks in New Jersey since 1837.

Although this shark is large for its species, it is by no means an outlier. A 1,000 pound great white shark named Ironbound was tracked off the Jersey Shore in April 2022. Additionally, OCEARCH tagged and tracked a 16 foot, 3,456 female named Mary Lee for 4 years along East cost.

Its last known location was off the south coast of Jersey.
