Raksha Bandhan got off to an extremely slow start to the box office on day 1. Advance reservations didn’t promise to start and the lack of interest showed as early as the morning shows. The Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar Starrer saw barely 12-15% occupancy nationwide, below already low expectations, which shocked both the trade and the film industry. In fact, the aperture is even smaller than Laal Singh Chaddhawhich itself is very low at 15-20%.

Star Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar was almost a non-runner in high-end metropolitan areas but actually managed to perform better in mass belts like UP, Bihar, MP and Gujarat than Laal Singh Chaddha, but the public basic hindi belt output is missing. Based on the occupancy and trend going forward, Raksha Bandhan is heading for an opening in the ₹8-10 crore nett range. The only difference here is that the expectations weren’t high to be like the other movie, and if the Hindi belt clicks a bit, it could easily top Laal Singh Chaddha in the long run on single screens everywhere, depending on how long that run would actually be.

Based on the occupancy and trend going forward, Laal Singh Chaddha is heading for a double-digit opening, but that’s no cause for celebration. Some within the industry were predicting an opening in the ₹16-18 crore net range, but following what is happening now and based on our discussions with reputable trade sources, it appears that Aamir’s standout Khan and Kareena Kapoor will collect somewhere in the range of ₹12-13 crore nett, which is certainly too low for a film with this kind of budget and star case, when Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 opened at ₹14.11 crore nett. Anything less than that would be a disaster from day one itself.
